A Grade II listed former hotel had stood largely vacant for twenty years with the historic building deteriorating despite its landmark status and affection amongst local residents. The local university identified the property as the site for their new creative hub and collaborative workspace.
The building's protected status imposed strict conservation requirements, whilst securing capital funding from multiple public and third-sector sources including central government required robust business case justification. The project necessitated a careful balance between heritage preservation and commercial functionality.
Our building consultancy team investigated various regeneration options with the building owner before securing £2 million in capital funding from diverse sources including central government grants. Working collaboratively with the university team as well as local architects and construction firms, we developed designs honouring the building's historic fabric whilst creating flexible, contemporary spaces. Throughout the three-year programme, we managed complex heritage considerations, coordinated multiple stakeholder requirements, and maintained rigorous budget discipline given public funding scrutiny.
The regeneration has revived an iconic building, transforming it into a new focal point for vibrant arts and cultural life.
