John is General Counsel and Group Company Secretary at BTG, based at the Manchester head office. He is responsible for managing risk, ensuring legal governance and compliance, establishing legal strategy, and advising the various boards, senior executives and colleagues across all service lines on legal, compliance and risk related matters.

Sitting on BTG’s various boards and sub-committees, John is a solicitor with over 25 years of experience in corporate, commercial, regulatory, real estate and litigation/dispute resolution matters.

Prior to joining BTG, he held roles both in-house and in private practice.

He is a member of the Solicitors Regulatory Authority (SRA) and the Law Society.

US tariff reset erodes UK’s advantage as exporters prepare for the next regime

The Trump administration has replaced the reciprocal tariffs regime that was struck down by the Supreme Court with a non-discriminatory tariff tool, shifting tariff risk to a more uncertain carve-out-driven framework. In this new regime, the UK’s prior relative advantage for non-exempt goods is no longer assured and outcomes depend on sector carve-outs, product mix and enforcement.
